Are you Interested in a Large Dog? Why not?

Large dogs are 60-100 lbs dogs. Large dogs hold their bladders forever, almost always great with toddlers and small children! Also, they do not have to jump up on you to get a pet or a kiss, and are calm.

Last Hope always have some great examples of these lovable creatures. We get large dogs because they need more room to exercise, they are strays, or the owners are moving and cannot find rental property or a home that will allow their dog. Last Hope receives many large breed dogs because owners will not pay the dog catcher to retrieve their dog back.  Instead, if the owner wants another dog, they can go to a rural area and get a free puppy.  Last Hope looks for homes that have a fenced-in-yards or invisible fencing and that the adopter owns their home.  Most rental properties do not allow large dogs.

At Last Hope, we also look for indoor homes for these wonderful dogs. All dogs want to be with their pack or family!  Large breed dogs, even if always been outdoors, are easy to housebreak.  Once they are in the home and sleep near you, they won't want to live outdoors again!  Large dogs can be taught to only sleep on the floor and not sit on your couch if you like!

Litters are usually 8-10 pups.  It is easy to find a large breed pup since one person has a hard time finding 10 good homes!  Last Hope seems to always have large breed pups looking for homes. Ours are always wormed, and have their first set of shots. Buying a pup that has not had shots or not continuing the vaccination schedule is asking for trouble. You can lose your pup to distemper or parvo which almost always is fatal in dogs even if treated.  Treatments are hundreds of dollars.

Black dogs are very common in large breed because labs are very common and black is a dominant color.  If you really would like to rescue a dog, get a black large mixed breed male.  Statistics show that these are the dogs that are most commonly put down in shelters across the country.  We do get purebreds such as chocolate labs, black labs, German shepherds, boxers and huskies. Ask us to put you on a waiting list for one of these. When Last Hope saves a large mixed breed dog, the adoption fee never covers the vet bills. We can lose $125 on one adoption!  Thank God for those that donate to Last Hope to keep us going!
